New Horizons, New LLC
Yes, I'm finally back. Funny enough, in my last post in 2013, I was making grand declarations of writing about business side projects and that… never happened.
So what have I been up to since 2013? I got married, bought a house, did the adult stuff. Life pretty much got in the way.

But I'm back now because I'm planning on starting up GeekModish again in a new kind of incarnation. Since I've been working as a software engineer for many years now, I'm actually building my own applications and my own content site. And since there are a lot of little projects in the works, they're all going to live under the GeekModish umbrella, now officially my LLC. You know, for liability protection and all that good stuff.
And once again, I'm not entirely sure how frequently I'll write blog posts, but I will try to write something occasionally. The reason is that I would much rather be building something than updating people about it. So right now I'm in the process of moving all the GeekModish-related stuff over to the official LLC and working on my apps.
The Refresh
In between all that, I decided to give the website a clean refresh so it doesn't look like it's been sitting untouched for over a decade (because it has been). The old site was very blog-ish, circa 2010. Whereas I think the new design still has the heart (literally?) of the previous incarnation, but much more modern.

If you're wondering about the tech stack, it's Astro with TypeScript, some React, and a little bit of Tailwind. The design itself was pretty quick and easy to put together (having more years of experience under my belt definitely helps), but learning tools like Astro, which was brand new to me, was where AI really came in clutch and made things simpler.
What I'm Working On
Some of the apps, sites, and projects I'm working on right now are in stealth mode, and some are a little bit more public. I'm just one of those people who prefers to keep things under wraps until it's ready to go live, and then I'll make an announcement.

The current "stealth" project is a mobile-only scavenger hunt game app. I've have run playtests and I'm still working out the bugs and refining the UX. I'm getting a lot of help from AI and LLMs who I treat as very capable junior devs as I architect and manage the project. It has definitely helped with development time, but talking to actual users and working with real people takes time. Since coding is so "cheap" now, I want to focus on the design and UX and make it the best possible experience for users.
There's a staging environment set up right now where people are playing the game while I gather feedback, test, and work on the marketing strategy. This also happens to be the first app where I've gotten this many users, even though it's still in staging. This is pretty exciting.
The tentative launch date is sometime this fall.
What's Next
I'm hoping to use this momentum to jump-start other projects I'm working on, and to possibly apply for some startup incubators or hacker residencies. My spouse (who is also a software engineer) and I are targeting sometime in late 2026 or 2027 to do a month-long digital nomad excursion to work with other founders and creators.
So stay tuned. I'm very excited for what's ahead, especially the part where more and more people start using an app I built myself. Here's to hoping I stick to it this time!
